Zelenskiy says Ukraine committed to talks with US in Saudi Arabia
- 8 March, 12:30
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday he is “fully committed” to talks with representatives from the United States in Saudi Arabia next week.
“Ukraine has been seeking peace from the very first second of this war. Realistic proposals are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively. On our side, we are fully committed to constructive dialogue, and we hope to discuss and agree on the necessary decisions and steps,” Zelenskiy posted on X social media platform.
Zelenskiy said he will visit to Saudi Arabia next week and will meet with the Crown Prince on Monday. After the meeting, Ukrainian representatives will stay for a meeting with the US team. However, the Ukrainian leader called for increased sanctions targeting Moscow, following Russia’s deadly aerial strikes on eastern Donetsk region, killing 14 people and injuring dozens others. The Russian attack was the first since US suspended military and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Earlier, on Friday, Donald Trump floated the idea that more sanctions might be imposed on Russia to bring Vladimir Putin to negotiating table.
Zelenskiy’s comment about talks with the US came after the White House on Saturday quoted Secretary of State Marco Rubio as telling Ukraine’s foreign minister that President Donald Trump is willing to end the three-year-old war in Ukraine “as soon as possible”.
