Zelenskiy says Trump’s “unpredictability” could end war with Russia

With three weeks left before president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, Kyiv is seeking to build bridges with Trump over fears of an end to US military aid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in an interview on Thursday that Donald Trump was decisive in the war with Russia. "He's very strong and unpredictable, and I would really like to see President Trump's unpredictability apply to Russia. I believe he really wants to end the war," Zelensky said in an interview with Ukrainian TV.

Zelenskiy said he supported the idea of France deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine to guarantee a possible peace deal with Russia. "However, France alone is not enough. We would not want it to be one or two countries if it comes to this initiative. It should definitely be on the way to NATO," Zelenskiy said. Zelenskiy was referring to French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks last year that deployment of Western troops in Ukraine was not ruled out.

In the same interview, Zelenskiy acknowledged that there was fatigue among Ukrainian troops, saying “they are pressing and the guys are tired.”

Russian army has been launching relentless assaults on Ukraine in the past months, advancing almost 4,000 square kilometres in Ukraine in the past year.
