Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has urged Western allies to provide his country with more air defenses and long-range weapons after the deadly Russian attacks in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region. Seven civilians, including two children were killed as Russia launched missile attacks on Vilniansk city in the region on Sunday. Eight people were injured in the attack with aerial bombs.
“Our cities and communities suffer from such Russian strikes daily. Ukraine needs the necessary forces and resources to destroy the carriers of these bombs. Clear decisions are needed to protect our people. Long-distance strikes and modern air defences are crucial to halting daily Russian terror,” Zelenskiy wrote on the Telegram message app after the strike on Vilniansk in Zaporizhzhia region.
Zelenskiy stressed that Moscow had used more than 800 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine this week alone.
Earlier on Saturday, 15 civilians were killed and 37 others were injured in a Russian missile attack on the south of Ukraine. Russia has stepped up missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages since March, using a new type of guided bomb. Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry on Sunday said its troops had captured the villages of Spirne and Novooleksandrivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.
Kyiv has repeatedly urged its allies to provide Ukraine with air defence systems to protect the country’s skies against Russian offensives. Ukraine has four Patriot systems supplied by the US and Germany. The US, Germany, Romania and the Netherlands have pledged to provide Ukraine with more Patriots air defence systems.
