The US has expressed “deep concerns” over Israeli airstrike on a residential building in northern Gaza that killed 93 people, including children.
“We are deeply concerned by the loss of civilian life in this incident. This was a horrifying incident with a horrifying result,” US state department spokesperson Matthew Mille told reporters on Tuesday.
The attack was carried out on a five-storey residential building housing displaced persons in the town of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. Some media reports put the number of killed people at 109.
“There are reports of two dozen children killed in this incident. No doubt a number of them are children who have been fleeing the effects of this war for more than a year now,” Matthew Mille said, adding that US officials have reached out to Israel’s government “to ask what happened here”.
The Israeli military said it was "aware of reports that civilians were harmed today in the Beit Lahia area". It added that the details of the incident were being looked into. The Israel Defense Forces, IDF, have been operating in northern Gaza during the past two weeks, particularly in the areas of Jabalia, Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun.
