An award-winning Ukrainian female journalist chronicling Russian invasion has died in captivity in Russia.

Viktoriia Roshchyna, 27, was confirmed dead on 19 September after she went missing in Ukraine’s now Russian-occupied territories in August 2023. She was reporting from occupied areas under dangerous conditions before she was detained and held in custody the first time, for ten days.

The news of the journalist’s death surfaced this week. The Russian Defence Ministry sent a letter to Roshchyna’s father informing of her death. However, the Defence Ministry gave no explanation of the journalist’s death.

Roshchyna’s death was commemorated in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv where her friend’s held a vigil on the Maidan in central Kyiv.
