Ukrainian troops repelled a Russian battalion’s large-scale attack on Tuesday as Kyiv’s incursion into the border Kursk region continues.
Soldiers from Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade destroyed 10 units of Russian armoured vehicles and eliminated Russia military personnel, the brigade’s spokesperson Anastasia Blyshchyk told Ukrainian media on Wednesday.
"Yesterday indeed was a dark day for Russian occupation forces, which attempted 5-6 waves of assaults. They tried deploying armoured vehicles and assault troops to break through, and assaulted individual settlements,” Blyshchyk stated. The surviving Russian soldiers hid in the nearby woods, the spokesperson claimed.
A video published on Telegram messaging app, allegedly showed the attack on Russians in Kursk.
Earlier, Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi explained strategic importance of Kursk region, saying "the importance of this operational area cannot be underestimated given the number of enemy troops concentrated there.” Kyiv claims Russia has transferred 50,000 soldiers to Kursk from other areas of the frontline to repel Ukrainian attacks. According to Ukrainian, South Korean and US intelligence reports, Kremlin has also stationed tens of thousands of North Korean troops to the Kursk region for launching a major offensive in the area. Asked about North Korean troops’ stationing in Russia, President Vladimir Putin last month did not deny this reports.
Ukraine launched large-scale incursion into Russia’s border Kursk region in early August. On August 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed for the first time that his army was conducting military operations in Kursk. He described Kursk as a “buffer zone” for securing Ukraine’s borders from Russian troops’ frequent shelling of Ukraine’s Sumy region.
