Ukrainian troops struck an S-400 surface-to-air missile system in Russia’s Kursk region on Sunday shortly after the US authorized Kyiv’s use of long-range missiles deep into Russia.
“Units of the missile forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, jointly with other units of the Defense Forces, launched a group attack on the positions of the anti-aircraft missile division of the 1490th anti-aircraft missile regiment of the 6th Russian Army on Russia’s Kursk region overnight,” the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reported on November 24.
Ukrainian Telegram channel Dosye Spiona reported that the attack was launched with US-made Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, and resulted in the deaths of five Russian officers, including a commander and chief of Staff of Bolshoye Zhirovo settlement in Kursk region. The Telegram channel also reported the destruction of 92N6E radar station and two launchers as well as the fatal injury of three employees of a state-funded weapons manufacturing company Almaz-Antey.
It should be noted that S-400 missile system, known as Triumf, is equivalent of US Patriot air defence system. Earlier this month, the US approved Ukraine’s use of ATACMS ballistic missiles in attacks deep into Russian territory, after which Kyiv struck an ammunition depot in Bryansk region. Ukraine is also believed to have fired British Storm Shadow long-range missile into Russia last week despite the fact that London has not officially confirmed this.
Earlier, Russian Defence Ministry reported that its air defence forces downed 44 Ukrainian drones over the territory of the country. Ukraine also reported large-scale Russian drone and missile attacks on Monday morning across the country’s territory that resulted in the injury of thirty people in largely-populated Kharkiv and Odessa regions. Zelenskiy said his country was becoming a testing ground for Russian missiles, with as much as 500 drones and 20 missiles being launched in the past week.
