Ukraine struck an oil refinery in Russia’s southern Rostov region on Thursday, causing a strong fire in Novoshakhtinsk refinery, Governor Vasily Golubev said. There have been no casualties during the attack.
"As a result of a drone attack, a fire broke out at the Novoshakhtink Oil Processing Plant. First responders are working at the scene. Information about casualties is now being verified," Golubov wrote on Telegram app. The fire spread to an area of 50 square meters. The governor said that the firefighting work had to be suspended due to another attack. “The personnel were told to withdraw to a safe distance. A firefighting train is being readied for use," he said.
Another drone attack was launched on an oil storage facility in Russia’s Belgorod region on the same day. The attack was carried out with the use of loitering munitions, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on Telegram.
"The armed forces of Ukraine used a kamikaze drone to attack an oil base on the territory of the Stary Oskol urban district. As a result, a storage tank caught fire. Four fire crews quickly put it out," Gladkov said.
Russia and Ukraine have been targeting each other’s energy infrastructure since the start of the war. Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the winter of 2022-2023 left millions of people without light or heating for long periods.
