Ukraine said on Friday it struck a storage depot of drones in Russia’s southern Rostov region. A source within the Ukrainian Security Service, SBU, told local media that NEPTUN cruise missile was used in the attack that was carried out jointly with Ukrainian marines near the village of Chaltyr in Russia's Rostov region.
According to the source, at first, Ukrainian drones reportedly "overloaded" Russian air defenses, with a Neptune missile hitting the site shortly after.
A video posted on social media showed the moment of the explosion in the drone warehouse. The SBU said the warehouse was housing reconnaissance drones used in Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities and the front line. “Now there will be fewer of these Russian ‘birds’ in the sky. Work on military targets in the enemy rear will continue,” a source within the SBU told local media. Neptun is Ukraine’s domestically-produced anti-ship missile with a range of 300 kilometers.
The attack on Rostov follows Russian reports that Ukraine attacked five Russian regions earlier that day. The Russian Defence Ministry said it downed 40 drones, including 16 over Rostov region on the night leading to January 10.
