Ukrainian forces captured the village of Pischane near Pokrovsk in eastern Donetsk region on Sunday amid signs that Russia’s advances may be slowing down. Military official Viktor Trehubov confirmed that the city in south-west of Pokrovsk was captured.
"We can now confirm the liberation of the village of Pishchane. It is located about five kilometers south of Pokrovsk. Russian forces have also been pushed back from several other nearby settlements," Trehubov said, adding that the situation on the front line is changing rapidly.
The official stressed that a significant turning point had occurred in the Pokrovsk sector of the frontline where Russian forces have suffered heavy losses.
"This month, they were also somewhat halted and even pushed back in certain settlements," said the official, explaining that this was primarily due to the use of drones and the cooperation of various Ukrainian units.
The news of the re-capture of the village comes amid stalled progress of Russian troops in the east of Ukraine. Addressing the Munich Security Conference, Zelenskyy confirmed that the situation in the Pokrovsk direction had recently improved. Pokrovsk has been the center of fighting in the eastern part of the front. According to a spokesperson for Ukraine’s ground forces, Maj Viktor Trehubov, , 7,000 Russian soldiers died in January in the battle for Pokrovsk, and 15,000 are wounded or missing last month.
