Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on Moscow on Sunday, in what became the largest attack on the capital since Russia launched invasion of Ukraine around three years ago.
Local officials said that a 52-year-old woman was injured and two homes were set on fire in the village of Stanovoye in Moscow region as a result of the overnight attack. The drone attack also forced the temporary closure of three Moscow airports, with flights being temporary cancelled. Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov described the Sunday attack as massive.
Russian Defence Ministry revealed that the country Air Forces downed 70 Ukrainian drones over six regions. Of these drones, 34 were shot down over Moscow region, while the rest were downed in Ramenskoye, Kolomna and Domodedovo districts. According the Defence Ministry’s earlier report, Russia downed 23 Ukrainian drones over the border regions of Bryansk, Rostov, Belgorod and Kursk overnight. In Bryansk region, Ukrainian troops struck the ammunition depots of the 1060th Material and Technical Support Center, the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reported. "At least eight explosions were recorded. Objective control results indicate at least two fire points at the military facility and signs of secondary detonation," the General Staff said in Facebook post on Sunday. The regional governor Alexander Bogomaz reported the downing of 14 Ukrainian drones, while adding that there were no casualties during the attack.
It should be noted that the border regions of Kursk, Bryansk, Rostov and Belgorod are regularly subjected to Ukrainian drone and attacks.
Although Ukrainian troops strike regions deep in Russia quite frequently, the attacks on the capital Moscow are rear. In the previous largest drone attack near Moscow in September, a woman was killed in Ramenskoye. In addition, two Ukrainian drones were downed near the Kremlin in May. There were also several drone attacks on Moscow City business district this year.
