Ukraine has deployed US-supplied ADAM anti-personnel landmines in the frontline to boost its defence capabilities and counter Russia’s “human wave tactics”.
First revealed last year as part of US military aid to Ukraine, ADAM landmines are now part of Ukraine’s military arsenal. With 55mm artillery shells, this anti-personnel landmine is capable of deploying 36 ADAM mines in each round and self-destructs after a predetermined time to minimize risk to civilians. OSINT research reported that the landmines have been spotted at the hands of the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the video circulated online. The analysts identified the shell in footage as the 155mm M692 artillery round, which contains 36 antipersonnel mines. The M692 carries 36 M67 mines with a 48 hour self destruct.
The shells can have a range of around 17.6 kilometers when fire from self-propelled systems such as the M109.
In November, 2024, outgoing US administration announced that it would supply Ukraine with ADAM land mines, as part of a new military aid bundle to Ukraine worth $275 million. The US underscored the land mines’ role in helping Ukraine counter Russian “human wave” assaults. The US aid package also included the Modular Pack Mine System (MOPMS) and the Volcano system.
