Ukrainian Air forces and Defence Forces struck a drone storage facility in Russia’s Western Oryol region on Sunday, the General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reported.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the General Staff said that according to preliminary information, more than 200 Iranian-made Shaheed kamikaze drones were destroyed in the attack, adding that the results and extent of the damage are being specified.
"Concrete structures storing thermobaric warheads for drones were hit. The strike triggered a strong secondary detonation," the post said. Worth as low as $20,000, Shaheed drones can fly up to 1,000 kilometers and has been widely used by the Russian army in attacks on Ukraine since full-fledged invasion of the country in February 2022.
Ukraine has been striking Russia’s oil and defence infrastructure in response to Moscow’s relentless strikes on its residential areas. In a statement on Sunday, the Ukrainian General Staff pledged to continue such attacks. "Combat actions targeting critical facilities involved in the destruction of Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and terrorizing the civilian population will continue."
Oryol region has been the target of Ukrainian attacks last month on December 22 and December 28. The facility is used for drone storage, maintenance, and repair.
