Ukrainian troops have captured another village in Russia’s border Kursk region in a fresh attack on the region’s Lgov town, Ukrainian Special Operations Forces reported on Tuesday, December 31.

The Special Operations Forces revealed that initially the artillery units of the Ukrainian defense forces targeted the settlement. Subsequently, soldiers from the Special Operations Forces entered the village, reclaimed it, and carried out a cleanup operation in the area, which reportedly took place recently, the agency said.

The attack follows Russian reports about Ukraine’s fresh attacks on Monday. Kursk’s acting governor Alexander Khinshtein said on December 30 that Ukrainian forces damaged a two-storey apartment building, injuring one person during an attack on the town of Lgov. Two power lines were damaged in two areas.

"Their purpose is to frighten people, sow confusion, panic and chaos. And to deny children the chance to enjoy the forthcoming New Year," Khinshtein said of the Ukrainian attack.

The attack on Kursk comes a week after four people were killed in a Ukrainian attack on Kursk.

Ukrainian troops launched large-scarce incursion into Russia’s border Kursk region in early August, seizing swathes of lands and capturing Russian troops in the region. However, Russia has been making gains in the region in the past months, and is believed to have captured around half of the Ukrainian-captured territories. Russia has also deployed around 12,000 North Korean troops in Kursk to bolster defences against Ukrainian attacks on the region.
