UK’s newly-appointed Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reiterated Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine. At his first international gathering since securing a decisive victory in the recent election, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will address NATO leaders on Thursday. He will emphasize the need for a united front in supporting Ukraine, sending a strong message to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Starmer also reaffirmed his commitment to providing Ukraine with a significant military aid package of £3 billion.
NATO leaders welcomed Starmer warmly, particularly appreciating the stability his large majority in Parliament provides for his new government.
Early in his term, Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, echoing the previous Conservative government’s pledge to provide $3.9 billion annually in military aid until at least 2030-31, and possibly beyond if necessary. This underscores Britain’s continued role as a leading and vocal supporter of Ukraine.
In his speech to NATO leaders, Starmer will emphasize the importance of unity and shared values, drawing a parallel to the generation that defeated fascism and established NATO. He will argue that the alliance’s strength lies not only in its military might but also in the values it stands for.
Starmer will directly address Putin, warning him that NATO is united and determined to support Ukraine for as long as it takes to defend their shared values and security. He will call for a strong message of unity and resolve to come from the summit.
Demonstrating his immediate commitment to Ukraine, Starmer swiftly appointed new ministers and sent them to show Britain’s continued support, just hours after Labour’s To highlight Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine, Foreign Secretary David Lammy embarked on a weekend trip to Germany, Poland, and Sweden, reaffirming their shared commitment to Ukraine’s cause.
Meanwhile, Defence Secretary John Healey traveled to Kyiv to personally assure President Zelenskyy that the Labour government would maintain an “ironclad” commitment to supporting Ukraine.
Healey emphasized that the new government would accelerate the delivery of military aid promised by the previous administration in April, pledging additional shipments of ammunition, missiles, boats, and artillery.
