Trump urges China to mediate peace talks between Russia, Ukraine

US President-elect Donald Trump has called on China to broker the peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Trump revealed in an interview with NBC on Sunday that he had communicated with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as early as this week adding that they “got along very well”.

The US president-elect suggested China could play an important role in mediating the negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv to put an end to the nearly three-years-old war.

“They have ridiculously lost 400,000 soldiers and many more civilians. There should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being so needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed, and if it keeps going, it can turn into something much bigger, and far worse. I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting,” Trump wrote later in a social media post.

Trump has repeatedly called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He called for immediate cease-fire after meeting Volodymyr Zelenskiy alongside Emmanuel Macron in Paris on weekend as world leaders gathered to celebrate the restoration of Notre Dame cathedral after a devastating fire. “Zelenskyy and Ukraine would like to make a deal and stop the madness," Trump wrote on social media after the meeting.

Kremlin responded positively to Trump’s post, with Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterating Russia’s position that it’s open to talks with Ukraine. In turn, Zelenskiy said the meeting with Trump was positive, adding that Ukraine needs a “just and robust peace, that Russians will not destroy within a few years.”
