A decorated Russian general has been killed during Ukraine’s counteroffensive in Russian-controlled southern Zaporizhzhia region.
“As a result of an enemy missile attack, the Chief of Staff of the 35th Combined Arms Army, Maj Gen Sergei Goryachev, was killed,” Russian prominent pro war blogger Voenkor wrote in Telegram channel. According to several war bloggers, Goryachev was killed by a UK-provided Storm Shadow cruise missile. Goryachev had earlier led Russian troops in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region.
Over a dozen Russian generals are said to be killed since Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine last year. Zaporizhzhia is the main focus of the Ukrainian army’s counteroffensive. Last week, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the long-awaited counteroffensive against the Russian army. Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 9 acknowledged that Ukraine’s counteroffensive started and t were suffering “significant” losses.
