A rare Ukrainian strike with the use of British Storm Shadow missile killed a Russian general and 500 North Korean troops stationed in Russia’s Kursk region last week. Ukrainian Telegram channel Dosye Spiona reported that the attack took place on November 20.
A high-ranking military official - Lieutenant General Solodchuk, the first deputy commander of the Leningrad Military District, was reportedly killed during the attack. Eighteen Russian officers were also killed, with a further 18 reportedly wounded in the same attack, according to the report. Among the wounded were three North Koreans, one of them a female medic who sustained minor wounds. Most of the casualties were from the Russian Southern and Eastern Military Districts.
The attack was launched at approximately 3:00 PM local time on an underground facility in Maryino estate in Kursk and marked the first use us UK-produced Storm Shadow long-range missile deep into Russia.
Thirteen additional servicemen from the 88th Engineering Regiment were injured in an explosion during the cleanup operation in the aftermath of the Ukrainian strike.
Kremlin has not confirmed its losses in the attack yet. The attack came days after Ukraine fired a US-made long range missile, Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, at a military depot in Russia’s Bryansk region following Biden administration’s authorization of the use of such missiles deep into Russia. Commenting on the use of long-range missiles on Russia, Vladimir Putin said last week: “We consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities."
