Poland has unveiled a new military aid package, the 46th of its kind, worth 100 million euros, to Ukraine amid efforts to bolster Kyiv's defences in war against Russia.
Announcing the new aid package in Ukraine’s western Lviv city on Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reiterated Warsaw’s unwavering support to Kyiv. “We are preparing the next donation,” Tusk said during a press conference alongside President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, adding that the aid package would be ready in January. “Our history is both complicated and beautiful. There have been many positive and negative aspects in our relations, but this is the history of nations that in the face of hardship, proved to understand the pivotal historical moment, marked by Russia’s invasion,” Tusk said following his meeting with Zelenskiy.
Commenting on Poland’s upcoming presidency of the European Union for six months starting January 1, Tusk assured Zelenskiy that his country would act on behalf of Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU. Tusk also pledged to “make the prospect of Ukraine’s NATO membership for Ukraine, increasingly real.”
It should be noted that in July this year, Tusk and Zelenskiy signed a security guarantees agreement document, which includes provisions for intercepting missiles and drones in Ukrainian airspace if they are directed towards Poland. The document also envisages the creation of a Ukrainian Legion in Poland, as well as partnership in defence, specifically on production of Polish defense companies in Ukraine, the exploration of additional opportunities for joint defense production.
Zelenskiy had mentioned in November that Poland was preparing another military aid package for Kyiv.
