Eleven civilians, including five children were killed in Russian missile strikes on Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region on January 6, the Ukrainian military reported. The attacks were carried out with S-300 missiles.
“Eleven dead, including five children - these are the preliminary results of the strikes on Pokrovsk district. Russians hit the area with S-300 missiles, killing 11 people and wounding 8 others. The main hit was on Pokrovsk and Rivne of the Myrnohrad community,”the head of the Donetsk region’s military administration, Vadym Filashkin, said in a post on Telegram.
"The main blow was dealt to Pokrovsk and Rivne in the community of Myrnograd," Vadim Filashkin noted. He added that Russia sought to inflict as much grief as possible. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Voloymyr Zelenskiy pledged that “none of these strikes will pass without consequences for the terrorist state.”
With a pre-war population of 60,000, Pokrovsk town had already been hit by a deadly bombardment last August, which left nine people dead and 82 injured. A Russian military statement posted on Saturday denied targeting civilians and claimed that its forces had struck a Ukrainian military command post near Pokrovsk.
Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians in its war of invasion launched in February 2022.
