Ukraine struck Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery near Moscow on the night leading to Sunday, making it the second attack on the same spot in a week. Ukraine's military said that the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine launched another attack on the facilities of the Ryazan Oil Refining Company, which it said is the fourth largest refinery in Russia and is used by Moscow's air force. The military said fire was observed in the area. The attack was carried out jointly by Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and Ukraine's Special Operations Forces (SOS).
The governor of Ryazan region, Pavlo Malkov, confirmed that Russian air defense units repelled and destroyed several drones over the region, adding that the authorities were assessing the damage.
With the capacity to process 17 million metric tons of oil per year, the Ryazan Oil Refinery is among Russia’s largest and is key in Russia's military-industrial complex. Ryazan is approximately 500 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. The latest attack on the refinery was launched on January 24.
"The refinery plays an important role in providing fuel for both the civilian and military-industrial complex of Russia," Andrii Kovalenko, the counter-disinformation chief at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said on Telegram.
