As Russian troops are making gains in Ukraine, the Russian Defence Ministry on Monday announced the capture of two more strategic settlements in the east of the country.
According to a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry, Units of the Yug (South) Group of Armed Forces captured Spornoye in the self-proclaimed Donetsk people’s republic, while the Tsentr (Center) Group captured Novoaleksandrovka settlement in Donetsk.
Russian territorial gains in eastern Ukraine came as Russian forces have been pushing the struggling Ukrainian army in several directions for several weeks now. In a statement, the ministry said that Stepova Novoselivka village with a pre-war population of about 30 people is located 17 kilometers southeast of Kupyansk near the important highway and the Shaparivka railway station.
The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, in an evening report, said its troops had repelled 17 attacks in the Kupiansk sector near Kharkiv, including by Stepova Novoselivka. It said fighting was raging near Synkivka, further west. Another captured village - Novopokrovske –is also strategic as it is located near the embattled Avdiivka town.
