Russia blames Ukraine for attacks on its Belgorod region amid peace talks

Russian military said on late Tuesday that it repelled a Ukrainian attack on its border Belgorod region, accusing Kyiv of undermining peace talks between Russian and US presidents.

Russian Defence Ministry stated a total of five attacks were carried out by Ukraine during the day. No crossing of the state border of the Russian Federation was permitted. According to the ministry, Ukraine deployed up to 200 soldiers, five tanks, 16 armored combat vehicles and three demolition vehicles in the attack on Belgorod region.

The attack came just hours after US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin had a phone call during which Putin agreed to temporarily halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure but rejected a broader ceasefire along the frontline. Ukrainian leader Zelenskiy supported the limited ceasefire but added that Putin was not ready for peace and sought to weaken Ukraine.

Ukraine has not yet commented on Russia’s claims about cross-border incursion. Ukraine has repeatedly attacked Russia’s border regions since the start of the full-fledged invasion three years ago, including in Kursk region where Kyiv has captured swathes of lands. Ukraine seeks to make gains in Russia’s Kursk region to use it as a bargaining chip in peace negotiations.
