Russia’s advances in Ukraine grew seven-fold in 2024, compared to 2023, AFP reported on Tuesday based on analysis of data from the Institute of the Study of War. Namely, Russian troops advanced by almost 4,000 square kilometres in Ukraine in 2024, seven times more compared to the previous year and two-and-a-half times more than in December 2022 when Russia launched full-fledged invasion of Ukraine.
A significant portion of Russia's territorial gains occurred in the autumn, with 610 square kilometers captured in October and 725 square kilometers in November. These two months saw the largest territorial gains by Russia since March 2022, during the initial weeks of the conflict.
Russia's progress decelerated in December, covering only 465 square kilometres during the first 30 days of the month.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his New Year address to the nation on Tuesday that Ukraine would do everything to stop Russia in 2025. Ukraine is bracing for the inauguration of US president-elect Donald Trump who has promised a quick end to Russia-Ukraine war and will likely cut US military aid to Kyiv. The outgoing President Joe Biden unveiled $6 billion in military aid to Ukraine in a race to support Kyiv ahead of Trump’s taking office in late January.
