With no end in sight to Ukraine war, Poland to start manufacture of explosives

Amid escalation of Russia-Ukraine conflict and as the war entered the 1000th day, Poland has announced its intention to start domestic production of materials for ammunition manufacturing. Warsaw announced on Monday that it has signed a letter of intent with local companies to produce nitrocellulose and multi-base powders, which are essential for ammunition manufacturing.
The ammunition factory is yet another attempt by Poland to enhance its defence capabilities in preparation for potential future conflicts. "It marks the initial step towards restoring Poland's ammunition production capacity," Defense Minister ladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
State-owned companies including Grupa Azoty, Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), Mesko, and the Industrial Development Agency have acknowledged the necessity of establishing a factory for nitrocellulose and multi-base powders, as reported by Grupa Azoty.
Presently, Poland imports explosives from various countries, including Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Finland, Switzerland, and Canada. Earlier this month, the Polish government revealed plans to invest $750 million to enhance ammunition production capabilities.
Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized, "Anyone observing the war in Ukraine and other global conflicts today can hardly doubt the significance of having access to a substantial supply of ammunition for modern weaponry."
Marcin Idzik, a board member of PGZ, informed Reuters this year that Poland needs to manufacture 155mm artillery rounds to ensure adequate supplies in the event of a Russian attack on NATO.
