Iran to deliver “painful” response to Israel ahead of US election

Iran is likely to respond to Israel’s last week’s attack ahead of US presidential election on November 5, CNN reported on Thursday, citing an unnamed senior Iranian official.

“The response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Zionist regime’s aggression will be definitive and painful,” the source said. The statement by an anonymous official is in contrast to Tehran’s earlier attempts to downplay the impact and severity of Israeli attacks. Iran’s Foreign Minister Aragchi said earlier that Israel’s attack caused “only limited damage” and pledged that the attack would be avenged sooner or later.

Israel and its allies have been bracing for Iran’s possible retaliatory attack. Israel launched a barrage of strikes on Iran on October 26 targeting Iran’s military sites, particularly ammunition manufacturing facilities. Israel said it launched strikes on twenty Iranian military sites used in strikes against it. The attack on Saturday particularly targeted defence systems, missile bases, and drone facilities in capital Tehran. Satellite images published by media showed Iran’s ballistic missile bases were struck, suggesting that Israel targeted the country’s missile production.

The attack was in response to Iran’s previous strike on Israel. Prior to launching the attack, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the attack was in response to attacks launched on his country by Iran and its proxies in the region since October 7.

Earlier in October, Iran launched missiles at Israel in response to Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the assassinations of top officials of Hamas, Hezbollah and IRGC.
