Iran’s newly-elected President Masoud Pezeshkian has reiterated his government’s committent to fostering political, economic, and humanitarian relations with Armenia. Pezeshkian made the remarks during the meeting with Armenian Prime Nikol Pashinyan on July 30, just a day after being sworn in as Iran’s new leader.
President Pezeshkian highlighted the historical and cultural bonds between the two nations as a foundation for further bilateral cooperation. He expressed readiness to enrich the cooperation agenda through joint efforts.
Congratulating Pezeshkian on his election as Iran’s new president, Pashinyan stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation based on mutual respect and understanding. He underlined the importance of Iran’s role in various infrastructure projects, including the North-South highway and the modernization of the Armenia-Iran border checkpoint, as a key element in strengthening Armenia-Iran relations. He also touched upon the “Crossroads of Peace” project, aimed at facilitating communication across the region.
The leaders discussed strengthening trade and economic ties and implementing joint programs in healthcare, modern technologies, education, science, and culture. Iranian President Pezeshkian noted his positive experiences from a private visit to Armenia, and both leaders highlighted the importance of high-level mutual visits.
Pashinyan was visiting Tehran to attend Pezekishian’s inauguration ceremony. He later met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei. During the meeting, Khamenei reiterated Iran’s stance that the “Zangezur corridor” (a transit project initiated by Azerbaijan) does not align with Armenia’s interests, as the Iranian ISNA news agency reported. He emphasized the importance of Armenia’s territorial integrity and affirmed that Armenian-Iranian relations would continue to develop based on mutual interests, irrespective of the politics of other countries. Khamenei stressed that other nations should not interfere in the relations between neighboring countries.
