Georgia’s ruling party set to outlaw LGBTQ+ “propaganda”

Georgia’s ruling party has proposed amendments to the constitution to restrict the LGBTQ+ rights in another move that would threaten the country’s accession to the European Union.
The Georgian Dream party proposed to ban what it terms LGBTQ+ “propaganda” in order "to protect family values and minors." The proposed ban includes restricting public demonstrations or publications that it deemed to “popularise same-sex family or intimate relations” as well as banning gender transitioning.
The changes would also outlaw any medical assistance in gender transitioning or any legal gender recognition for transgender people.
The amendments to the constitution were announced by Georgian Dream’s parliamentary leader Mamuka Mdinaradze on March 25. Mdinaradze said the amendments would allow “a union of a single genetic male and a single genetic female."
Mdinaradze did not rule out banning pro- LGBTQ+ demonstrations if they amounted to “popularization” of queer sexuality.
