The European Union's Parliament passed a resolution on Tuesday expressing its support for Armenia's potential application for EU membership.
The resolution emphasized that if Armenia were to apply for candidate status and continue implementing reforms, it could lead to a significant transformation in EU-Armenia relations. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan welcomed the resolution the following day and affirmed his government's commitment to enhancing Armenia-EU relations. He highlighted the importance of public discourse on Armenia's future vision, stating that it warranted broader attention from the Armenian public.
The Parliament acknowledged the pressing requirement to enhance security and defense collaboration with Armenia, particularly as Armenia reevaluates its membership in the CSTO. It recommended that the EU should positively consider Armenia's appeal for assistance through the European Peace Facility and extend support to the Armenian military. Furthermore, it cautioned that Moscow could potentially employ threats against Yerevan as a means to retaliate for its independent political and strategic decisions. Consequently, the EU should be prepared to swiftly aid Armenia in mitigating any adverse effects resulting from such unfriendly actions.
Armenian officials have been openly discussing Yerevan's intention to pursue EU candidacy since March. In February, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, announced the initiation of an ambitious partnership agenda with Armenia, encompassing discussions on visa liberalization, as well as trade and security cooperation.
