- 1 April, 11:34
The EU Monitoring Mission has refuted Azerbaijan's claims of Armenian troop buildup, asserting that the situation at the border is peaceful. Following patrols all day, the mission confirmed the calm and quiet atmosphere. Toivo Klaar, the EU's Special Representative for the South Caucasus, echoed this sentiment and expressed the mission's willingness to engage further with Azerbaijan.
“Good to have confirmation from @EUmARMENIA that no unusual military movements have been observed. That is what the purpose of the mission is: to provide greater transparency and build confidence. It remains open to more engagement also with the authorities of Azerbaijan,” Toivo Klaar wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter on March 31.
Azerbaijan's Ministry of Defence alleged that Armenia is deploying troops and heavy weaponry towards the border area. The statement claimed a buildup of manpower, armored vehicles, artillery, and other military assets by the Armenian armed forces along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Additionally, the Ministry accused Armenia of promoting aggressive rhetoric, revanchism, and disseminating provocative information to heighten tensions and potentially engage in sabotage actions.
Furthermore, the ministry accused Armenia of revanchism and aggressive rhetoric against Azerbaijan aimed at aggravating the situation in the information environment in an attempt to carry out sabotage.
‘We once again declare that Armenia and its protectors will bear full responsibility for the aggravation of the situation and any possible provocation’, concluded the Azerbaijani ministry’s statement.
