As the full-scale war approaches three year mark, Russia continues attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. In the latest of such attacks, a Russian missile strike killed one woman and injured 16 others in Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv town, local authorities reported on Tuesday.
Images released from the area showed several buildings catching fire and firefighters working to extinguish the blaze.
The Black Sea coast city of Mykolaiv has been the site of intensive Russian attacks in recent months. With a pre-war population of under half a million people, the city came under heavy Russian bombardment since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, Ukrainian forces pushed back Russian troops in the area later that year. Despite this, Russia continues to strike the town and has stepped up attacks on the nearby port city of Odessa as well, damaging port facilities and ships.
The attack on Mykolaiv follows another Russian attack on Monday in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region where two women aged 72 and 56 were killed in a drone strike on a civilian car. It should be noted that recently, there have been frequent reports of Russian drones striking civilian vehicles. Another attack on the same day on the port of Odessa killed one person and injured eight others. Two civilian ships were damage in the attack.
