- 30 December, 12:02
US President Joe Biden on Monday announced $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine to help Kyiv’s war efforts.
The aid package includes an additional $1.25 billion drawdown package for the Ukrainian military, as well as a $1.22 billion Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, USAI, according to the statement posted on White House website on December 30.
The new security assistance aims to supply Ukraine with air defense, artillery, and other critical weapons systems, and provides “an immediate influx of capabilities that it continues to use to great effect on the battlefield.”
Biden highlighted that the Department of Defense is currently providing Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds, thousands of rockets, and hundreds of armored vehicles to bolster its efforts as winter approaches. Under my direction, the United States will persist in tirelessly supporting Ukraine's position in this conflict for the remainder of my time in office.
Biden also mentioned that the Department of Defense has used all remaining USAI funds provided by Congress. He ended by emphasizing that the United States will keep working tirelessly to bolster Ukraine's position in its fight against Russia for the rest of his time in office.
The United States is Ukraine’s largest military supporter in the war with Russia, with Washington provided approximately $64.1 billion in military aid to Kyiv since the start of Russia’s full-fledged invasion in February 2022.
