Azerbaijan’s ruling party wins victory in snap parliamentary election

zerbaijan’s ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party (YAP) won the majority of seats in the snap parliamentary election held on sSunday.

At a press conference, Central Election Commission Chairman Mezahir Panahov revealed the names of the candidates who garnered the highest number of votes.

Preliminary results indicate that the YAP party, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, secured 68 seats in the National Assembly.

In addition, 44 independent candidates were elected to parliament. The Civic Solidarity Party obtained three seats, while the Justice, Law and Democracy Party acquired two seats. Furthermore, the Great Azerbaijan Party, Democratic Reforms Party, Great Creation Party, Republican Alternative Party, Motherland Party, Azerbaijan National Independence Party, National Front Party, and Azerbaijan Democratic Enlightenment Party each won one seat.

"The snap parliamentary election marked the first in the country since it regained complete control over the previously breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh during a swift offensive against ethnic Armenian forces last year. This was also the first time in 30 years that voting took place in Nagorno-Karabakh."

This marks the second time in 2024 that the citizens of Azerbaijan are casting their votes. While they are now selecting their parliamentary representatives, they previously participated in presidential elections seven months ago."
