Azerbaijan pledges humanitarian support to Syria

Azerbaijan has expressed its readiness to address humanitarian challenges in Syria following the toppling of Bashar al-Assad, the foreign ministry said on December 10.

"Azerbaijan is ready, in cooperation with its brotherly Turkey and like-minded partners, to contribute to addressing the humanitarian challenges faced by the Syrian people," the ministry stated in the statement issued on the situation in Syria.

Highlighting that Baku supports Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, the ministry expressed hope "for the resolution of all issues through political dialogue within the country and in accordance with the will of the Syrian people."

The ministry expressed hope that the Azerbaijani-Syrian ties will be restored and cooperation will develop based on principles of mutual friendship and partnership after the situation is stabilized in Syria. Furthermore, the ministry stressed that Azerbaijan will continue the process of repatriating its citizens from Syria through Turkey, a process initiated in 2020.

The document highlights the importance of restoring peace and stability and ending civil conflict in Syria after the toppling of Bashar al-Assad’s long-standing regime.

On the same day, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev discussed the situation in Syria in a phone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Türkiye's Communications Directorate said. Aliyev expressed his satisfaction with the new situation in Syria.

Syria’s anti-government groups captured capital Aleppo on Sunday after days of fighting, toppling President Bashar al-Assad who had been in power for nearly 25 years. The country’s Baath Party ruling party had been in power in Syria since 1963.
