Azerbaijan extends COVID-related land border closure

Azerbaijan has once again extended the special quarantine regime that involves the closure of its land borders due to COVID-19.

Under the relevant decree signed by Prime Minister Ali Asadov and passed by the Cabin of Ministers on December 11, the quarantine regime is extended “in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) on Azerbaijan's territory and its possible consequences”.

The country first introduced the special quarantine regime with the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020. Most of the restrictions due to the coronavirus have already been lifted, including the use of COVID-19 vaccines and facemasks. PCR tests for entry to the country by air are also no longer required. However, the land borders remained closed since March, while only cargo from Georgia, Russia, Iran, and Turkey, remained allowed to enter the country by land. Azerbaijan’s borders remain closed despite the World Health Organization delcaring the end of the COVID-19 global health emergency in May 2023.
