Nine people were killed and over a dozen injured after a Russian drone attack on residential building in Ukrainian city of Sumy on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said.
"This is a terrible tragedy, a terrible Russian crime. It is very important that the world does not pause in putting pressure on Russia for this terror," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on social media. Among the dead were three couples — men and women between the ages of 61 and 74 — Ukrainian prosecutors said.
Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko said rescuers have been dismantling the rubble, pulling out bodies from under the ruins. Among the 13 injured people was 8-year-old girl.
"Putin claims to be ready for negotiations, but this is what he actually does. Only strength works with liars," Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on social media.
Ukrainian police reported receiving 129 statements from local residents about the consequences of the Russian shelling, adding that the process of documenting Russia's “war crime” - a direct attack on civilians - was underway.
On the same day, Ukraine’s air forces reported downing 37 out of 81 Russian drones, including Iranian-made Shaeed drones, launched across Ukraine on Thursday.
