Russian cluster bomb attack kills three civilians in southern Ukraine

Kyiv on Thursday said three Ukrainian civilians were killed after a Russian attack involving cluster munitions was launched in Chornobayivka suburb of southern city of Kherson.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said five more people were injured and over 60 residential and infrastructure buildings were damaged during the heavy shelling in the afternoon.

According to the Ukrainian presidential office, Russian forces fired on other parts of Kherson region with eight nighttime artillery barrages, killing a 42-year-old man in his apartment building and injuring another man. Russian shelling also killed two people in eastern Donetsk region.  It should be noted that cluster munitions that release smaller “bomblets” across a wide area, are being used both by Russia and Ukraine during the ongoing war.

Located on the war frontline, Kherson region has been the venue of heavy fighting in Russia’s full-fledged invasion of Ukraine that was launched February last year. Ukrainian troops last week reported gaining multiple bridgeheads on the Russian-held eastern side of Dnipro River upon which Kherson is located.

Meanwhile, Russian state media reported that an employee of Russian state television channel Russia 24 Boris Maksudov died after being wounded in a drone attack while working in Ukraine’s Russian-held southern Zaporizhzhia region. Maksudov, a TV journalist, was working on a story about alleged shelling of civilians by Ukraine during the time of the attack.
