Ukraine’s long-range Flamingo missiles struck sanctioned Russian plant, says Zelenskiy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has revealed that the domestically-produced Flaming long-range missiles launched at Russian missile manufacturing plant on February 21, hit their target, while also hailing the country’s defence industry.

Addressing a news conference alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Wednesday, Zelenskiy said Flamingo subsonic cruise missile hit the Votkinsk Plant in Russia’s Udmurt Republic. 1,068 kilometers east of Moscow. However, he denied to reveal how many Flamingo missiles had been fired at Russia.

“We carried out precise strikes with ‘Flamingo’ missiles at a range of 1,400 kilometers. I believe this is truly a success for our industry,” Zelenskiy said. “There were interceptions by Russian air defense, there were also missiles that were not intercepted, and there were direct hits. But the most important thing is that all the missiles that were launched reached the target facility,” Zelenskiy explained.

Votkinsk Plant that was hit in the attack produces various types of Russian missiles, including Iskander-M, Topol-M and Oreshnik systems and is under sanctions from the US and number of Western countries.

Devloped by Ukraine’s Fire Point firm, Flamingo missile has a claimed range of more than 3,000 kilometers. According to Fire Point representatives, Flamingo outperforms US long-range Tomahawk missile. The latest versions of Flamingo missiles are equipped with bunker-busting warheads capable of penetrating to around 10 meters of reinforced concrete.
