Armenia, Azerbaijan exchange list of potential trade goods

Yerevan and Baku are reviewing a trade deal and have exchanged a list of potential trade goods, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pahinyan said.

Pashinyan made the remarks at a press briefing on Thursday, ahead of arrival of another batch of Azerbaijani fuel to the country. Following Pashinyan’s remarks, Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan told local media on Friday that Yerevan was negotiating with Baku export of aluminum foil, raw aluminum foil, ferromolybdenum, domesticated animals, raw materials for brandy, tobacco, textile, roses, and other greenhouse products from Armenia to Azerbaijan.

Papoyan said Azerbaijan has presented a list of specific products it is interested in importing, while Armenia has named their price and the quantities it could supply. Without providing any time frame for possible exports to Azerbaijan, the minister said trade could start as companies in both companies reach an agreement. No Armenian product has been delivered to Azerbaijan so far.

Azerbaijan sent first batch of fuel products to Armenia in December, in the first trade and economic transaction between the two countries since the end of nearly four-decades-conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh region. The second batch of Azerbaijan petroleum is on its way to reach Armenia. In late October, Azerbaijan lifted all cargo transit restrictions to Armenia in a sign of warming of ties and the end of hostilities. The cargo ban had been in effect for nearly forty years since both countries were locked in a bloody conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh region. Announcing the lifting of the ban in Astana, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on October 21 said the decision was “a good indicator that the peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia is no longer on paper, but in practice.” The first cargo shipment to Armenia after the lifting of ban, was wheat sent from Kazakhstan. Armenia also received wheat from Russia via Azerbaijan.

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought two wars over Nagorno  fought two wars over region in the early 1990s and in 2020. The two countries reach a US-brokered peace deal during on August 8 after signing a peace declaration in the White House.
