Officials in Baku have rejected recent media reports about Iran’s alleged plans to strike an Israeli military base in Azerbaijan.

Baku’s comments follow the controversial report published in Telegraph. The British publication quoted unnamed top Iranian generals alleging that Iran might strike an Israeli military base in Azerbaijan. The publication reported that Iran’s newly-elected President Masoud Pezeshkian

has allegedly suggested “targeting somewhere related to Israel in the Republic of Azerbaijan or [Iraqi] Kurdistan and let these countries know before that and get done with the whole drama.”

Pro-government APA news agency on August 10 quoted an anonymous Azerbaijani official as saying that the Telegraph article was “fake” and “disinformation” aimed at undermining ties between Azerbaijan and its southern neighbor Iran.

"Some circles have started to worry about the recent normalization of relations between Iran and Azerbaijan and want to disrupt this process," sources in the Azerbaijani authorities told APA.

“It would be good if the Iranian side responded to these claims, refuted them and put an end to doubts,” the sources added. The speculations about possible Iranian attack on Azerbaijan follows the escalation of tension between Iran and Israel when Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas militant group was assassinated in Tehran on July 31 while attending Pezeshkian’s inauguration ceremony.
